Rebecca Luna, a prominent TikTok creator who gained attention for documenting her battle with young-onset Alzheimer's, has passed away at the age of 49. Luna, a resident of Victoria, British Columbia, chose to end her life through medical assistance in dying (MAID).
The news was shared via a social media update on Saturday, July 25, which stated: «Rebecca passed away July 25th at approximately 1:15 p.m. surrounded by her loved ones. Thank you for your support and privacy.» Her eldest daughter, Maya, echoed this sentiment through a GoFundMe page originally established by her mother to assist with end-of-life arrangements.
Choosing Medical Assistance in Dying
In a candid post on her fundraising page, Luna explained her difficult situation: «Hi, as a lot of you know I was diagnosed at age 48 with Young Onset Alzheimer’s. I’m 49 and I will be accessing MAID as my decline has come faster than I had hoped.»
MAID is a legal practice in which a medical professional provides a terminally ill patient with the means to undergo a peaceful and intentional death. Luna first brought her diagnosis to the public eye in April 2025. At the time, she expressed a desire to fill a void in resources for younger individuals suffering from the condition, noting that while she had connected with some peers, the experience of the disease often felt isolating.
A Difficult Final Decision
In her final video uploaded on July 22, Luna spoke directly to her followers about her decision to move up her MAID date to that Friday. She shared the emotional weight of her circumstances, stating:
«It’s a hard decision to make, I have to tell you, because I’m living in a body that doesn’t feel comfortable, safe, good, nothing. It feels terrible. And so the idea of waiting two weeks felt like too much.»
Luna emphasized that while the timing had been dictated by legal and medical constraints for over a year, the final choice to move the date forward was one she made for herself to find relief from her declining health.
