An Unforeseen Detour
Brothers Zach and Nate Johnson faced several challenges during their time on The Amazing Race, but one significant hurdle remained hidden from television audiences. Following their recent elimination from the reality competition, the pair revealed that their water taxi driver failed to take them to the correct destination.
"When we boarded our water taxi, the driver didn't drop us at the right spot, leaving us about a mile and a half away from the clue box," 27-year-old Nate explained. He noted that the footage captured their intense hustle as they tried to make up for the lost time and distance.
The Competitive Gap
During the season premiere, which took place in Vancouver, viewers watched as the brothers narrowly missed an Aquabus carrying other contestants. While they successfully boarded the next available vessel, the gravity of the navigation error only became apparent after they reached their detour.
Zach, 30, noted that because they were dropped off at the wrong location, they missed seeing the other teams' progress, including the flag detour. However, the experience gave them a new perspective on how close the race actually was.
"It really was close because there was still a bunch of other stuff happening with these other teams that we couldn't see," Zach said.
Overcoming Adversity
Despite the frustration of the situation, Nate reflected on the experience as a test of their resolve. He shared that rather than panicking, they focused on finding the right directions and pushing forward to complete the tasks.
When the brothers finally arrived at the canoeing challenge, several other teams were still in the middle of their own tasks. According to the brothers, the time difference between them and their competitors remained razor-thin throughout the leg. Zach recalled that even at the pit stop, the gap was only a matter of a few minutes, highlighting how quickly the standings could change due to timing and navigation.
