A Decisive Victory
The curtains have closed on season 28 of Big Brother, with Rick Devens officially declared the winner. During the live finale broadcast on Thursday, October 1, Devens secured his victory following a 6-1 jury vote, taking home the $750,000 grand prize. Runner-up Taylor Brown earned $75,000 for her second-place finish.
The path to the finale was marked by intense competition. Taylor, 27, dominated the first portion of the final Head of Household (HoH) challenge, while 42-year-old Devens emerged triumphant in the second. In the ultimate showdown, Devens came out on top, ultimately choosing to evict Drew Campbell.
More Than Just the Grand Prize
It was a highly successful night for Devens, who was also named “America’s Favorite Houseguest,” adding an extra $50,000 to his winnings. His total earnings for the season were further bolstered by a $10,000 bonus received earlier during the “pharaoh’s curse” twist.
Devens, previously known for his appearances on Survivor: Edge of Extinction and Survivor 50, remained a front-runner throughout the competition. A former news anchor, he combined competition wins with the formation of several strong alliances. Among his most notable strategic plays was his decision to save his ally, Dee, using the Diamond Power of Veto, which he had secured during the second week of play.
The Gameplay of the Finalists
Drew Campbell’s journey through the house was characterized by tight social ties and high-stakes gameplay. Though some observers labeled him a “weasel” for his tactical maneuvering and involvement in two major alliances, his strategy proved effective in carrying him to the final stage of the game.
Conversely, Taylor Brown opted for a more understated approach in the early stages of the competition. She cultivated a strong partnership with Latrice “Lala” Verrett, providing guidance until Lala’s eviction. Following that shift, Taylor pivoted to a more aggressive game, securing critical competition wins when they mattered most, including the final four HoH, which guaranteed her place in the finale.
Reflections on the Final Three
Reflecting on the competitive atmosphere, Taylor expressed her satisfaction with the final group, stating: “It’s anyone’s game. I’m so excited, and I’m happy no matter who wins because I’m very happy with this final three.”
Host Chen Moonves revealed she had been a strong supporter of Taylor’s game, noting: “I think she’s someone who won when she had to know not to let emotions get the best of her. Didn’t have loose lips or you know her ego like lash out. If that meant she stayed confined to her pod a lot, it’s a strategy, and I love that she loves Jesus so much, and she gave him the glory when she won that last puzzle competition. I just love her.”
