A New Chapter for the Congresswoman

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who serves New York City’s 14th congressional district, recently took to social media to offer a rare glimpse into her private life. During the August recess, the 36-year-old congresswoman utilized Instagram Stories to reconnect with her audience, noting that she is currently in a “reflective mood” and wished to share a significant personal milestone.

“I want to share with you all a decision that is very personal that I have made that has taken me time to consider, weigh and save up for,” she stated. “It is of a sensitive matter and a personal matter and usually I keep my private life quite private, but I have made the decision to start freezing my eggs.”

Navigating Public Perception and Political Risks

Ocasio-Cortez, who made history in 2018 as the youngest woman ever elected to the House of Representatives, is engaged to her longtime partner, Riley Roberts. She acknowledged that her choice is partly influenced by the constant public speculation regarding her potential future political trajectory, including rumors about presidential ambitions.

The congresswoman reflected on the “political tax” often associated with women in power, noting that their personal life choices are scrutinized far more intensely than those of their male counterparts. She remarked, “People don’t go down those rabbit holes and fixate on them for men in terms of their decision the way they do for women.” Despite the risks, she emphasized that she is prepared to face the consequences, prioritizing her own autonomy and peace of mind over public opinion.

Empowerment Through Technology

Looking ahead, Ocasio-Cortez plans to document her journey to provide transparency and support for others facing similar life choices. She highlighted the advancements in reproductive technology that have made this option more financially accessible, calling it a “very privileged position.”

The congresswoman remains undeterred by the logistical challenges, including balancing the medical procedure with her demanding professional schedule. She described her plan to manage the process while working, stating: “I’m gonna be taking my shots in the green room before my interview. And I want you all to see that because women can do anything, and I think it’s badass that I’m gonna be, you know, giving myself shots in the green room, get my glam on, roll out talk about international events, domestic policy, elections, pop out, live my life, do my thing.”
