Public Statement and Frustration Over Leaks

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen recently addressed the media regarding the tragic drowning death of the 2-year-old son of his teammate, Ed Oliver. During a press conference held on Saturday, August 22, Allen expressed his deep sorrow and frustration concerning how the private matter reached the public sphere.

«First off, I want to say thank you to the ones that knew about it, and allowed him to have his moment and his time. It’s very sad,» Allen stated. «And, you know how it came out — it makes me very, very sad and angry at the same time.»

The organization chose to confirm the news only after various social media influencers began speculating about the tragedy. Many NFL insiders had been aware of the situation for some time but opted to maintain silence to respect the privacy of the 28-year-old defensive tackle and his family.

The Incident in Texas

According to reports from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, emergency responders were called to Oliver’s home in Texas on June 28 following an emergency call. The toddler was discovered unresponsive in a swimming pool and was subsequently transported to a hospital in Houston, where he was pronounced dead that evening.

Team Support and Unity

Allen emphasized that the primary focus of the team has been providing Oliver with the necessary space to grieve. «There’s nothing you can say. There’s nothing that you can do,» Allen explained. He noted that the defensive line, in particular, has been rallying around their teammate to offer support without forcing him to revisit the trauma.

Bills head coach Joe Brady also addressed the tragedy, noting the immense difficulty of the situation. «I can’t imagine it and I haven’t had the words since. I don’t really have the words now but all I can do is just be there for him in whatever way he needs,» Brady said.

Official Organizational Response

Buffalo Bills General Manager Brandon Beane issued a formal statement expressing the organization's deepest condolences. «On behalf of the entire Buffalo Bills organization, we want to publicly express our condolences to Ed Oliver and his family on the devastating loss of his son. It’s an unthinkable tragedy for any parent,» Beane stated.

Despite the overwhelming personal loss, Oliver has continued to participate in training camp activities this summer. While he missed the recent preseason game against the Cleveland Browns, the team confirmed this was due to a minor injury rather than his bereavement.
