A Final Advocacy Effort
Shortly before her unexpected death at age 36, actress Hayden Panettiere filmed what would become her final advocacy campaign for PETA. The organization released a promotional video on Tuesday, August 18, highlighting the star's passionate stance against the captivity of dolphins, whales, and other marine life in global theme parks.
In the video, Panettiere spoke candidly about the plight of these animals, emphasizing the psychological toll of their environment. She noted, «Can you imagine the animals’ frustration, their trauma, their depression? All that is important and crucial for their well-being is ripped away. We can end this. You and me. In their ocean homes, they can be with their families, dive deep to escape the hot sun and enjoy the rain on their backs … all of that is taken from them when they are confined to small tanks.»
The campaign footage illustrates the harsh reality for animals confined to cramped enclosures, where they are often forced to perform for crowds. The former Heroes star concluded the clip by urging the public to commit to boycotting marine parks that keep dolphins in restrictive captivity.
A Legacy of Animal Rights Activism
Following the video's release, PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange honored Panettiere’s long-standing commitment to animal welfare. The actress was well-known for her bold activism, most notably her appearance in the 2009 documentary The Cove, where she paddled into Japanese waters to confront dolphin hunters.
«Hayden Panettiere became a household name playing a hero on TV, but to animals, she was the real deal,» Lange stated. She further praised Panettiere for her bravery in Taiji, Japan, and her consistent criticism of facilities like SeaWorld, which the actress famously labeled «disgusting» for keeping complex marine mammals in concrete tanks.
Circumstances Surrounding Her Death
Panettiere passed away on Sunday, August 16. Authorities in Greenville, South Carolina, reported that she was found unresponsive at a residence, and reports suggest a suspected overdose. Her father, Skip Panettiere, released a statement describing his daughter as an «incredible light» and a «force of nature.»
An autopsy conducted on August 17 found no outward signs of trauma, according to the Greenville County Coroner’s Office. The official cause of death remains under investigation, pending further medical analysis. Local law enforcement continues to examine the circumstances of the tragedy.
