A New Chapter for an Animated Legend

Quinta Brunson, the acclaimed star and creator of Abbott Elementary, is taking on a legendary role. The 36-year-old actress is slated to star as the iconic Betty Boop in an upcoming feature film adaptation. This project is being developed through her production company, Fifth Chance Productions, in partnership with Mark Fleischer, the grandson of the character's creator, and Fleischer Studios.

Exploring the Origin Story

The film aims to provide a unique narrative lens. According to reports, the story will delve into the origins and growth of the Betty Boop character. It will focus on the complex dynamic between the artist, Max Fleischer, and his animated invention. The plot examines the creative and commercial challenges Fleischer faced while establishing one of the world's earliest cartoon icons, capturing the tension as the character begins to develop an identity independent of her creator.

Expressing her excitement for the project, Brunson shared her perspective on the character in a recent statement:

«Betty Boop is one of our nation’s most beloved cartoon characters, yet somehow still remains pleasantly niche.»

A Shared Vision

Mark Fleischer expressed deep enthusiasm for Brunson's involvement and the creative direction of the film. He noted, «When Quinta first approached me with the unique concept of a movie about the relationship of my grandfather, Max Fleischer, and his creation, Betty Boop, I was breathtaken. Quinta so embodies Betty’s love of life, intelligence, humor, sassiness and compassion that the relationship between her as Betty and Max burst into life at its mere mention.»

Brunson’s Illustrious Career

This new role adds to a decorated career for Brunson. She has gained significant critical acclaim for her portrayal of Janine Teagues in Abbott Elementary—a character named after her own 6th-grade teacher. Over the course of her career, she has garnered 12 Emmy nominations and two wins, including Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 2023 and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series in 2022.

Abbott Elementary continues to be a massive success for ABC, with the network recently announcing a renewal for a sixth season following the conclusion of its fifth season earlier this spring.
