Following her tenure on the hit series Yellowstone and the surprising narrative exit of her character, Monica, in the spin-off Marshals, actress Kelsey Asbille is officially returning to the screen. It was recently confirmed that the 34-year-old actress has signed on to star alongside Hollywood heavyweights Arnold Schwarzenegger and Liam Hemsworth in the upcoming action feature The Kellys.
Amazon MGM has secured the worldwide streaming rights for the project. While production is already moving forward, the studio is keeping specific details regarding Asbille’s character strictly confidential for the time being.
Plot Overview of 'The Kellys'
The film centers on Jack Kelly, a disgraced NYPD officer. The narrative tension escalates when his wife, Molly, is taken hostage by terrorists within a historic armory. The official synopsis teases a high-stakes rescue mission:
“Subsequently, he’ll have to join forces with the people he fears most to save her: His family.”
The Departure from 'Yellowstone'
Asbille’s previous character, Monica, concluded her arc in the original Yellowstone series alongside Kayce Dutton, having navigated the complexities of life on the ranch and the university setting. However, when the spin-off Marshals debuted in March, viewers were met with the revelation that Monica had passed away following a battle with cancer.
Showrunner Spencer Hudnut addressed the creative decision to end the character's journey in this manner, stating:
“Kayce had such a perfect ending in Yellowstone. His dreams had finally come true. As we were trying to figure out how to tell the next chapter in Kayce’s story, it felt like he really needed to be shaken out of that. Unfortunately, tragedy tends to find Kayce, so something bad was going to happen for him one way or the other. It just sort of played out that it was going to be Monica.”
Hudnut further emphasized the desire to handle the exit with sensitivity, noting that they aimed to remain respectful of the character's history while addressing the needs of the new narrative arc. Asbille, who allowed for the use of her likeness to feature photos of Monica in the new series, has yet to comment publicly on the character's onscreen death.
