A heartbreaking incident has occurred in Evansville, Indiana, where a three-year-old boy lost his life due to drowning. Authorities have since charged the child's mother, identified as Amie Jo Farber, with neglect of a dependent resulting in death.
Details of the Investigation
According to a probable cause affidavit, officers from the Evansville Police Department were dispatched to a private residence on Saturday afternoon following reports of an unresponsive child found in a swimming pool. Despite immediate efforts by first responders to perform lifesaving measures and an urgent transport to the hospital, the young boy was tragically pronounced dead.
Witness testimony included in the legal documents indicates that the homeowner was aware of Farber’s struggles with alcohol. The homeowner stated that Farber appeared to be under the influence upon her arrival. The events unfolded while the child was playing in the pool on a flotation device. According to the affidavit, the homeowner left the outdoor area for approximately ten minutes. Upon his return, he discovered Farber unconscious in a patio chair.
The Sequence of Events
After finding Farber unresponsive, the homeowner realized the child was missing from view. He then discovered the floatie overturned and the boy submerged face down in the water. The homeowner immediately pulled the child from the pool, began CPR, and requested emergency assistance. A bystander who called 911 reported to dispatchers that the mother had “passed out drunk” during the incident.
Investigations conducted by local police suggest that Farber had consumed five 25-ounce cans of Bud Ice within a two-hour window while at the residence. During police questioning, Farber acknowledged briefly entering the pool before returning to the chair, where she stated she “must’ve fallen asleep.”
Legal Status
Following the collection of a blood sample, Farber was taken into custody and transported to the Vandenburgh County Jail. She is currently being held on a $25,000 bond. Her scheduled court appearance is set for Wednesday, September 23. At this time, it remains unconfirmed whether the defendant has secured legal counsel or entered a plea regarding the charges.
