Yamal’s family had participated in a raffle, winning the opportunity to have their child photographed with a Barcelona player for a 2008 UNICEF calendar. Reflecting on the serendipity of the moment, photographer Joan Monfort expressed his amazement to the Associated Press:
“I have never been a believer or thought that anything was destined to occur, but I am beginning to have my doubts. This is beyond all reasonable explanations.”

The significance of this connection extends beyond the football field. Lamine Yamal, who was named a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 2026, has been vocal about the impact of the sport on his life. In a recent statement to the organization, he noted:
“Growing up, all I had was a family, a ball, a park and a dream. Playing football gave me structure, a sense of belonging, and hope for the future.”
Fellow Spanish teammate Mikel Merino admitted that when he first saw the viral image, he initially suspected it was a piece of AI-generated content. He remarked on the magnitude of the upcoming final, hoping for a historic performance from both stars.
