Ben Jones, the beloved actor best known for his portrayal of the mechanic Cooter Davenport in the classic 1980s action-comedy series The Dukes of Hazzard, has died. The actor passed away suddenly on Sunday, August 9, at the age of 84.
His wife, Alma Viator, shared the heartbreaking news on social media, noting that the actor suffered a massive heart attack while at home. According to Viator, Jones had been relaxing in his favorite chair, looking forward to watching a baseball game. “Ben had the most amazing, rich, full life. He loved and was loved by so many. He will be missed. I loved him so, so much,” she wrote.
Beyond the Hazzard County Garage
While Jones is cemented in pop culture history for his role as the energetic Cooter, his life extended far beyond the soundstage. Following the conclusion of The Dukes of Hazzard in 1985, he transitioned into the world of public service. He successfully ran for a seat in Georgia’s Fourth Congressional District in 1988 and earned re-election in 1990.
Reflecting on his diverse career path during a 2023 interview with Georgia Public Broadcasting, Jones maintained his characteristic wit: “Sounds like a guy who can’t hold [down] a job to me.”

Jones often looked back on his time as the wild, high-energy character Cooter with fondness. Recalling the production of the show, he once remarked: “When we started filming that show, I was a child actor at the time. Actually, I was a childish actor. We were just making it up. It was a wild, crazy show and I was cast for it because I was what they were looking for physically and … I just made it up. I had fun with it, it was hard not to have fun doing what we were doing. I am crazy Cooter.”
