A Tragic Loss for the Hughes Family
The sporting community is mourning the loss of Alex Hughes, the 38-year-old son of renowned former Manchester United forward Mark Hughes. His family recently confirmed that Alex passed away in June as a result of Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS).
Expressing his grief, 62-year-old Mark Hughes released a heartfelt statement:
“Jill and I are totally heartbroken by the sudden and unexpected loss of our beloved son Alex. Alex was a wonderful son, brother to Curtis and Xenna, devoted husband and father to Jessica and their two beautiful children Sebastian and Leonardo.”
Understanding SADS
According to experts at the Cleveland Clinic, SADS, or sudden arrhythmic death syndrome, is a hereditary condition characterized by abnormal heart rhythms. If left undiagnosed and untreated, the condition can lead to sudden, unexpected cardiac arrest.
A Life Dedicated to Football
Alex Hughes was a prominent figure in football administration, serving as the player recruitment lead at Grimsby Town FC. Before his tenure at Grimsby, he held various scouting and recruitment positions, including roles at Manchester City. Much like his father, who enjoyed an illustrious playing career at Manchester United and later transitioned into coaching, Alex maintained a deep commitment to the sport.
On June 19, Alex collapsed at his residence in Macclesfield, Cheshire. Despite the arrival of emergency medical personnel, they were unable to revive him. A coroner’s report has since determined the death to be from natural causes.
Tributes from the Football Community
Grimsby Town FC expressed profound sadness over the loss of their colleague. In an official statement, the club remarked:
“Everyone at Grimsby Town Football Club is devastated to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of our Player Recruitment Lead, Alex Hughes. Alex was a devoted husband, proud father, beloved son, brother and friend, and a highly valued member of the Grimsby Town family.”
The club highlighted Alex's contributions both professionally and personally, noting that his positive demeanor and dedication left a lasting impact on all who worked with him. The organization has requested that the public respect the family's privacy as they navigate this difficult time.
