The Evolution of a Television Phenomenon

Conceived by Simon Cowell, the reality talent competition America’s Got Talent premiered on NBC in the summer of 2006, following shortly after its initial development for British television.

While the roster of gifted contestants evolves with every new season, the production's framework has seen its fair share of transitions as well. In its inaugural season, the show was hosted by Regis Philbin, featuring a judging panel comprised of David Hasselhoff, Brandy Norwood, and Piers Morgan. Following the conclusion of that first season, Jerry Springer took over hosting duties, while Sharon Osbourne joined the panel of judges as a replacement for Norwood.

A Changing Judging Panel

Throughout its lengthy run, the judges' seats have been occupied by a variety of high-profile figures, including:

  • Simon Cowell
  • Howard Stern
  • Howie Mandel
  • Mel B
  • Heidi Klum
  • Gabrielle Union
  • Julianne Hough
  • Sofia Vergara

Despite the frequent changes in the show's lineup and the constant turnover at the judges' table, the primary focus of the program has consistently remained on the contestants and their remarkable abilities. As one observer noted regarding the show's enduring appeal: «The heart of the series has always been the performers chasing their dreams on the main stage.»
