Reframing the Narrative

Three years after her initial comments sparked headlines, 96-year-old actress Bonnie Bartlett is providing clarity regarding her 75-year marriage to 99-year-old actor William Daniels. In a recent interview, the couple addressed reports that they had participated in an “open marriage,” suggesting that previous interpretations of their relationship dynamics were exaggerated.

Bartlett noted that while the couple experienced periods where their lives diverged, the situation was never a structured or agreed-upon arrangement. «There was never any discussion as to what we were going to do, but in 75 years, the two of you together, you know, it would be abnormal if you … weren’t attracted occasionally to other people,» she explained.

The Reality of Commitment

Reflecting on their earlier years, Bartlett characterized their non-traditional interactions as unspoken rather than calculated. She emphasized that they never established formal ground rules, opting instead to navigate their lives organically, even when professional obligations required them to spend significant time apart.

However, Bartlett admitted that these deviations often resulted in emotional distress. Describing the social climate in New York during that era, she noted:

«It was at a time in New York when there was a lot of sex and a lot of people doing all kinds of things. But I don’t know if there was a lack of commitment a little bit, and that’s not good. So there was a lot of pain connected with any transgression, with any extramarital thing.»

A Lasting Partnership

In her 2023 memoir, Middle of the Rainbow, Bartlett opened up about the challenges they faced, including instances of infidelity by both parties. Despite these hurdles, the couple eventually matured, focusing on day-to-day companionship. She credits their longevity to a lack of rigid planning, stating, «Bill and I have moved forward day-by-day and eventually, the days added up.»

Building a Family Through Tragedy and Triumph

The couple’s journey has been defined by both profound loss and enduring joy. Ten years into their marriage, they welcomed their first son, William Jr., who passed away just 24 hours after birth. Bartlett has previously shared that this devastating experience eventually led them to adopt their sons, Michael and Robert.

«It happened after losing a child, after great pain and sadness, and then we got these two wonderful boys, and they have been a joy the whole marriage,» she shared. Today, the pair views their seven-decade journey not as a planned endeavor, but as a remarkable life they built together one day at a time.
