Following the fatal shooting near the White House on Saturday, information has surfaced regarding the identity and history of the deceased suspect. Identified as 21-year-old Nasire Best, reports suggest he struggled with ongoing mental health challenges. Sources indicate that Best had previous brushes with law enforcement in the vicinity of the White House and allegedly made explicit threats against President Donald Trump.
Documentation regarding his past behavior highlights several concerning incidents. On one occasion, Best was reportedly arrested while declaring that
“he was Jesus Christ.”Furthermore, he faced an involuntary psychiatric commitment in July 2025 after obstructing vehicle access near the White House grounds. His social media activity also reflected these delusions, with one post stating,
“I’m actually the son of God.”
The Incident at the White House
The confrontation occurred around 6:00 p.m. ET on Saturday near a Secret Service checkpoint. According to Secret Service Chief of Communications Anthony Guglielmi, an individual at the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue drew a weapon and initiated gunfire.
Secret Service officers responded immediately, firing back and striking the suspect. Best was transported to a local hospital, where he was subsequently declared dead. During the exchange, a bystander was caught in the crossfire and remains in critical condition. Officials confirmed that no Secret Service agents sustained injuries during the encounter, and the President was secure within the White House throughout the event.

The shooting caused an immediate lockdown of the area. Journalists present on the North Lawn were evacuated to the White House briefing room, where they were required to shelter in place for approximately 40 minutes.
Recounting the chaotic scene, ABC News White House correspondent Selina Wang noted on social media that she was recording content when the shots began.
“It sounded like dozens of gunshots,”Wang reported, describing the urgent evacuation of media members to safety.
