The Future of Ed Harris on Dutton Ranch
Following reports of dissatisfaction regarding his involvement in Dutton Ranch, questions have emerged about whether Ed Harris intends to walk away from the Paramount+ series before the second season begins. Despite his publicly stated frustrations, current industry reports suggest the 75-year-old actor is slated to return for the upcoming sophomore season, which is currently in development. Harris previously signed a two-year contract for the show, with an additional option for a third season.
Creative Shifts and Increased Screen Time
Much of the tension surrounding Harris reportedly stemmed from creative differences, specifically regarding the limited screen time for his character, Everett McKinney, during the inaugural season. However, co-stars Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser have indicated that the narrative focus is set to shift significantly.
«I think season 2 is going to feel very much more Ed’s show,» Reilly noted in a recent interview. «This is not the Beth and Rip show. This is Dutton Ranch, and there’s four lead characters.»
Cole Hauser echoed this sentiment, highlighting the caliber of talent Harris brings to the production:
«He’s such an amazing American actor that I think was used very sparingly this year. We’re going to make sure that he is a big part of helping us, moving forward in whatever capacity.»
Navigating Production Changes
The series has faced significant behind-the-scenes adjustments, including the departure of showrunner Chad Feehan following the conclusion of the first season. Reports suggest that Feehan, known for his work on Lawmen: Bass Reeves, exited the project due to friction with the cast.
Regarding the frequent changes in leadership, Hauser remarked: «Showrunners change all the time. This business is about adapting. We’ve been doing this for a long time. Things change. People move on.»
Looking Ahead to Season 2
To ensure stability for the future of the series, reports indicate that Ed Harris was actively involved in the selection of Benjamin Cavell, the creator of SEAL Team, as the new showrunner. As the production team recalibrates, fans can expect a revamped focus on the ensemble cast when Dutton Ranch makes its return to Paramount+ in 2027.
