For dedicated followers of The Big Bang Theory, the new spinoff Stuart Fails to Save the Universe might present some puzzling narrative inconsistencies. However, creators Chuck Lorre, Zak Penn, and Bill Prady have confirmed that these so-called “plot holes” were not mistakes—they were a deliberate creative choice.

In a recent conversation, Zak Penn humorously suggested that the team meticulously mapped out the story, joking, “Each morning we would get together and go over this big chart.” Chuck Lorre offered a more candid perspective, admitting that the team often felt like they were “in a dark room trying to figure out the elephant.” He further noted that while he kept a close eye on the temporal loop mechanics, maintaining absolute perfection was never the primary goal.

Penn emphasized that the existence of these inconsistencies is a badge of honor, remarking, “If they don’t have plot holes, then we didn’t do our job.” Bill Prady added that the characters within the HBO Max series are written to be self-aware of these strange occurrences as the story unfolds.

Prioritizing Humor Over Logic

Despite the complexity of the premise, Lorre argues that viewers shouldn't be obsessing over the mechanics of the show's logic. “Ultimately, if you’re looking for plot loopholes and you’re not laughing, we failed,” he stated.

The series follows Stuart Bloom, played by Kevin Sussman, as he inadvertently triggers a multiverse catastrophe after damaging a device engineered by Sheldon and Leonard. Stuart is joined on his chaotic mission by Denise (Lauren Lapkus), Bert (Brian Posehn), and Barry Kripke (John Ross Bowie).

Returning to the Iconic Character

For Kevin Sussman, stepping back into the role of Stuart was a seamless transition. “The original Stuart was sadly not too different than me,” Sussman explained. He noted that his approach to the character isn't about deep psychoanalysis, but rather about reacting to the absurd situations his character encounters.

Stuart Fails to Save the Universe continues the legacy of the hit franchise, which originally aired on CBS from 2007 to 2019. New episodes of the series are currently released on Thursdays on HBO Max.
