Understanding the Link Between Strength and Lifespan

Researchers from the University at Buffalo conducted a significant study tracking over 5,000 women between the ages of 63 and 99. The findings revealed that for every 7 kg (15-pound) increase in grip strength, there was a 12 percent reduction in the risk of all-cause mortality. Additionally, improving performance on a sit-to-stand chair test further lowered mortality risk by another 4 percent. Remarkably, these benefits persisted even when researchers accounted for factors such as inflammation, heart health, and overall physical activity levels.


This study reinforces a decade of global data. For instance, a 2015 study published in The Lancet involving nearly 140,000 adults across 17 countries demonstrated that a 5-kilogram decrease in grip strength was associated with a 16 percent increase in the risk of death from any cause. Beyond mere physical capability, newer research suggests a link to cellular health; a 2022 study in the Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle found that weaker grip strength correlates with accelerated biological aging at the DNA level.

The appeal of using grip strength as a clinical tool lies in its simplicity, low cost, and reproducibility. Unlike complex fitness assessments, a dynamometer test takes less than a minute and requires minimal training.
