A Legal Dispute Over Dating Show Branding
A conflict has arisen between Warner Bros. TV and Fox Nation concerning the new dating program The Vow, fronted by former The Bachelor host Chris Harrison. Reports indicate that WBTV, the production house behind the long-running Bachelor franchise, sent a cease and desist notice to Fox Nation on September 18, alleging that the new show infringes upon their intellectual property.
Claims of Intellectual Property Infringement
In the legal correspondence, Warner Bros. TV asserted that the promotional campaign for The Vow is a direct attempt to exploit the goodwill and established identity of The Bachelor. The letter states:
«a plain attempt to capitalize on and ‘ride on the coattails’ of WB’s instantly recognizable intellectual property and the Franchise’s goodwill in violation of, inter alia, state and federal trademark, copyright, and unfair competition laws.»
WBTV specifically highlighted the use of roses in the promotional materials—a symbol heavily associated with their franchise—and a thumbnail image that allegedly mimics the iconic "Bachelor Mansion."
Fox Nation’s Defense
Fox Nation has pushed back against these allegations, arguing that elements like falling roses are common tropes in pop culture, citing films such as Beauty and the Beast and American Beauty. Furthermore, Fox News Media’s executive vice president and general counsel, Katherine Moran Meeks, criticized the move as an attempt to stifle competition rather than a genuine protection of rights.
In a formal response, Meeks wrote:
«Your letter appears designed not to vindicate legitimate copyright and trademark interests, but to restrict FOX Nation and Chris Harrison from promoting a competing dating show. It is unfortunate that Warner Bros. is targeting Mr. Harrison in this malicious and vindictive manner.»
Show Format and Premiere
The Vow, which emphasizes traditional marriage, commitment, and building a life together, is scheduled to debut on November 11. The series will consist of six weekly episodes hosted by Harrison. This project marks a significant return for Harrison to the dating show format, following his departure from The Bachelor franchise in 2021.
