A Sudden Loss on the Field
The college football community is in mourning following the untimely death of MicahJo Barnett, a 20-year-old running back who collapsed during his university's season opener. The incident took place on Saturday, August 29, at Greene Stadium in Liberty, Missouri, during a Division II matchup between William Jewell College and Fort Lewis College.
Barnett experienced a medical emergency on the sidelines shortly after scoring a touchdown that secured a 7-0 lead for his team. The event occurred with approximately five minutes remaining in the first quarter.
Immediate Response and Hospitalization
According to Liberty Police Captain Nathan Mulch, medical personnel stationed at the stadium immediately intervened to assist the athlete. Despite receiving urgent care on-site for several minutes, Barnett was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was ultimately pronounced dead.
Following the tragedy, the football game was first suspended and subsequently cancelled in its entirety. A vigil was held on Saturday night by the student body to honor Barnett’s memory.
Official Statements and Tributes
Dr. Dave Van Horn, president of William Jewell College, expressed his grief during a press conference. He stated: «Our hearts are heavy, and we appreciate all of the support that we have received from the greater community… I want to say that we appreciate the response that we’ve received from the sheriff’s office, the police department, the EMS department, our school, the physician for the team… Everybody responded so quickly, so well.»
The university confirmed that Barnett was a junior pursuing a degree in business administration. The school is currently offering counseling and support services to students and staff affected by the loss.
A Promising Athlete's Legacy
Barnett, who grew up in Shawnee Mission, Kansas, was a standout athlete who led Liberty North High School to a state championship during his senior year. At the collegiate level, he was recognized as an Academic All-Great Lakes Valley Conference honoree for the 2025-26 season.
Despite injury setbacks that limited his playing time to five games last season, he remained the Cardinals' leader in rushing yards. Fort Lewis College officials also extended their condolences, noting that their counseling staff is working to support both their players and the William Jewell community during this difficult period.
