The Evolution of the Yellowstone Universe

Since its 2018 debut, the Yellowstone franchise has become a cultural phenomenon, centering on the lives of the Dutton family and their sprawling Montana ranch. The series captured audiences with stellar performances from Kevin Costner, Kelly Reilly, Luke Grimes, and others, coupled with its intense, unpredictable narrative arcs.

Creator Taylor Sheridan has since turned this foundation into a massive television empire. His expanding roster of hits now includes titles such as Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, Lioness, and Landman, alongside Yellowstone prequels like 1883 and 1923.

What Happened to '6666'?

While the franchise continues to grow, many dedicated followers are still searching for information regarding the previously announced 6666 series. The project was intended to focus on the character of Jimmy Hurdstrom, played by Jefferson White, during his experiences at the historic Four Sixes ranch in Texas.

The original promotional materials for the series painted a vivid picture of its setting:

«Founded when Comanches still ruled West Texas, no ranch in America is more steeped in the history of the West than the 6666. Still operating as it did two centuries before, and encompassing an entire county, the 6666 is where the rule of law and the laws of nature merge in a place where the most dangerous thing one does is the next thing. The 6666 is synonymous with the merciless endeavor to raise the finest horses and livestock in the world, and ultimately where world-class cowboys are born and made.»

Production Delays and Uncertain Future

The last major update regarding 6666 arrived in 2022, when it was revealed that the show would move to the Paramount Network rather than streaming on Paramount+. Since that time, silence from the studio and a focus on other projects—such as the potential 1944 prequel and the future of the core cast—have led many to speculate that the project may be stalled or shelved. Notably, Sheridan himself acquired the actual Four Sixes ranch in 2021.

Insights From the Cast

Kelly Reilly, who plays Beth Dutton, touched upon the unpredictability of the franchise's trajectory in a 2024 interview. Regarding the development of potential spin-offs and the conclusion of the flagship series, she noted the collaborative nature of Sheridan’s creative process:

«We don’t know until we get the scripts what the story is. And when the time to tell the story is upon us, there will be a script in my inbox. And I will be really happy to saddle up.»

Reilly added that while some narrative threads have been firmly tied off, others remain ambiguous: «I honestly don’t know how Taylor chooses to tell which stories he chooses to tell. I think he has closed a lot of doors on Yellowstone this season. But I think he has left some doors open, and there’s some doors that I can’t tell if they’re locked or not yet. But we will know when we cross through them.»
