Legal Verdict in Hidalgo County
A Texas man has been convicted for his involvement in the death of his two-month-old son. On Tuesday, June 9, a jury in Hidalgo County found 38-year-old Miguel Angel Ortiz Jr. guilty of one count of injury to a child by omission, a charge stemming from the infant's passing in June 2025.
While the jury recommended a 30-year prison sentence, the final decision remains with the presiding judge. Although convicted of injury to a child by omission, Ortiz was acquitted of more severe charges, including capital murder of a child under 10, murder, and aggravated assault.
The Discovery of the Incident
Authorities became aware of the situation during a wellness check at a home in Pharr, Texas. According to reports, responding officers discovered the baby's body inside the residence. A subsequent autopsy revealed that the infant had sustained multiple injuries, including bruising to the chest, skull, and buttocks. The medical examiner also noted clear indications that the body had begun to decompose by the time it was found.
Law enforcement officials noted that the investigation was triggered after acquaintances of Ortiz reported that he had claimed his son had passed away three days earlier. Upon further inquiry, investigators discovered that the parents had an ongoing case with Child Protective Services.
Status of the Mother and Legal Proceedings
The infant's mother, 35-year-old Karina Aidee Ramirez, faces separate, more serious charges, including capital murder of a child under 10 years of age, injury to a child, and child endangerment. Her trial is set to commence on Monday, June 15.
Both individuals have remained in custody at the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center since their arrests on June 23, 2025. While Ortiz awaits his sentencing hearing, Ramirez is being held on a $350,000 bond.
