The Start of the Path to Parenthood

For over a year, Jelly Roll and Bunnie Xo provided the public with insights into their hopes of expanding their family. The couple, who wed in 2016 and renewed their vows in 2023, announced in June 2024 that they were pursuing IVF treatment with the help of a surrogate. However, their nearly decade-long marriage came to an end in May 2026, when the musician filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences.

Jelly Roll initially shared their desire for another child during a 2024 podcast appearance. Reflecting on his significant weight loss at the time, he noted, «My wife and I are talking about having a baby, and it really made me realize that at almost 40, I was like, it means I got to live to at least 60. I got to see this kid into college.»

Choosing Surrogacy

Bunnie Xo later explained the decision to utilize a gestational carrier on her podcast, citing personal mental health struggles and a difficult history with pregnancy loss. She emphasized that protecting her well-being was a priority, stating:

«I am not mentally well enough to let my hormones get out of whack. … There is nothing wrong with having a surrogate. I would have trouble carrying a baby. I have lost many babies, you know. … My schedule does not allow for me to … have another miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy.»

Updates and Challenges Throughout 2025

Throughout 2025, the pair kept fans updated on their progress. In her memoir released that February, Bunnie shared the emotional toll the process took, while also noting, «J and I have a surrogate, the sweetest woman ever, and soon I’ll be starting my IVF stims.» By June 2025, she shared on social media that the couple had received positive news regarding their journey, describing it as a «huge win» despite the surrounding struggles.

Reframing Motherhood and Body Positivity

Bunnie Xo frequently spoke about her evolution as a mother, especially after helping raise Jelly Roll’s daughter, Bailee Ann. She expressed that this experience helped alleviate her fears about parenting.

Additionally, she addressed the pressures of public scrutiny regarding her appearance during the IVF process. In mid-2026, she spoke candidly about how hormone treatments affected her body, stating:

«As I was going through IVF, it put weight on me and people would be like, ‘Oh, she’s bigger than her husband now.’ … You’re literally trying to make a baby with your body. It’s like people just have no respect.»

Bunnie noted that she utilized a GLP-1 medication to help manage inflammation and weight gain during this physically demanding time, emphasizing that her focus was on feeling better and preparing her body for the future.
