The Expansion of the Fire Country Universe
The town of Edgewater first captured audience attention following the 2022 debut of Fire Country, which followed inmate Bode (Max Thieriot) as he joined the California Conservation Camp Program. By the second season of that series, a backdoor pilot successfully launched Sheriff Country, a spinoff centered on Mickey (Morena Baccarin), the estranged sister of Sharon (Diane Farr), as she takes on criminal investigations within the community.
Following strong ratings—averaging 7.6 million viewers and consistently leading its Friday 8 P.M. time slot—CBS officially renewed the series for a second season in December 2025.
Unpacking the Season 1 Cliffhanger
The first season concluded in May 2026 with a major revelation: Eva (Rachel Ticotin), the Deputy Director of the DEA, is actually Mickey’s mother, a woman everyone previously believed had died years ago.
Executive producer Lopez shared his enthusiasm for exploring the aftermath of this discovery. «It resets our family dynamic that’s at the heart of this show,» he noted. «It addresses all the interesting character wrinkles that it gave us to play. We’ll see in the early episodes, Wes thinks he and Mickey are on the same page that they were both betrayed by this woman. Mickey isn’t as on board and in some ways you can make the case that Wes’ betrayal was worse.»
Regarding the upcoming season, Lopez promised to subvert viewer expectations, noting that while the story will feature a time jump, the narrative will circle back to fill in the missing gaps. The emotional tension between Mickey, her father, and the return of her mother is set to provide a compelling engine for the new episodes.
