A Hard Look at Reality

Following the conclusion of the hit HBO drama Euphoria, creator Sam Levinson has spoken out to defend the series' final narrative direction, specifically addressing the polarizing death of the protagonist, Rue (played by Zendaya). During a post-episode reflection, Levinson emphasized that the decision to have the character succumb to an overdose was rooted in a commitment to depicting the harrowing reality of substance abuse.

«The honest ending is that people like Rue don’t make it,» Levinson stated, reflecting on his own personal experiences with addiction. He noted that the current landscape of drug use, particularly the prevalence of fentanyl, has made the struggle for recovery significantly more dangerous than it was in previous decades.

Drawing From Personal Loss

The finale’s tone was heavily influenced by the real-world tragedies that affected the cast and crew, most notably the 2025 passing of actor Angus Cloud. Levinson drew a parallel between the fictional narrative and the systemic crisis occurring across the United States. He noted, «People relapse and they f* up. They’re not ready to get clean. And they weren’t dying like they are now with the influx of fentanyl into this country. I could say with absolute certainty that if I was going through what I went through when I was younger now then I wouldn’t be here either.»

Honoring the Cast and the Craft

Despite the grim nature of the finale, Levinson expressed deep gratitude for Zendaya’s nuanced portrayal of Rue, noting how the audience grew to love the character despite her deep-seated flaws. The creator clarified that the show was always intended to explore the themes of grief and emotional turmoil, and that the conclusion was a culmination of these long-standing narrative arcs.

Levinson also took the opportunity to pay tribute to the late Angus Cloud, who passed away in 2023. Discussing his attempts to help the actor during his life, Levinson shared his perspective on mortality: «I realized more than anything is that death is what gives life meaning. You can’t be arrogant about existence. You’re forced to reckon with the fact that life itself is a wonder, a gift, a profound blessing.»

The Final Arc

In the episode, the character of Alamo, portrayed by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, causes Rue’s death by providing her with drugs laced with fentanyl. This plot point served as a catalyst for other character trajectories, including Ali’s (Colman Domingo) pursuit of justice. Levinson concluded his thoughts by expressing his hope that the remaining episodes and the legacy of the show serve as a fitting tribute to those lost, adding, «I thought that if I couldn’t keep him alive in life then maybe within this show that I can control and keep him alive there.»
