Tragic Incident in Pembroke Pines

A retired police sergeant from Pembroke Pines, Florida, has lost his life in a devastating murder-suicide involving his wife. According to information provided by the Broward Sheriff’s Office, emergency services were dispatched to a residence on the morning of Monday, September 21, following a distress call regarding two unresponsive individuals.

Upon arriving at the scene, first responders discovered the bodies of Joanne Baker, 59, and her husband, John Baker, 62. Preliminary reports from investigators indicate that Joanne Baker took her husband's life before taking her own. At this stage, law enforcement has not identified a clear motive or the specific circumstances that preceded the tragedy. The investigation remains active.

A Legacy of Public Service

John Baker served the Pembroke Pines community for nearly three decades, beginning his tenure with the department in 1994. Throughout his 28-year career, he held numerous significant roles, including field training officer, road patrol officer, traffic homicide investigator, and sergeant of the Traffic Unit. Notably, he was a founding member of the department’s Crisis Response Team, which provides support to first responders during traumatic events.

Beyond his official duties, Baker was deeply committed to traffic safety and frequently collaborated with the non-profit organization Mothers Against Drunk Driving. He was also a dedicated participant in the Special Olympics Torch Run.

Overcoming Personal Adversity

In August 2019, while on duty, Baker was involved in a severe motorcycle accident caused by a vehicle turning into his path. The incident left him with critical injuries that significantly impacted his speech and physical mobility. Despite these profound challenges, he worked diligently with his medical team and family to regain limited motor functions.

Reflecting on his character, the department issued a statement saying:

“The entire PPPD family mourns the sudden loss of Sergeant John Baker. Even with the challenges he faced from his work-related injury, his joyful and positive personality always persisted.”

John Baker, a father of three, was remembered for his love of music and travel, often spending his leisure time attending concerts with his family. He leaves behind a legacy of service and resilience.
