Conviction Follows Brutal Assault

A Pennsylvania man has been found guilty of attempted murder following a violent home invasion that left his ex-wife severely wounded. The incident, which occurred over a year ago, involved the perpetrator, Darrell Long, breaking into the victim's residence while she was resting.

Details of the Attack

According to reports from the Lebanon County District Attorney’s office, the assailant entered the home of his ex-wife, Dawn Long, armed with a .22 caliber handgun. Upon confronting her, he proceeded to pistol-whip the victim before shooting her multiple times in the limbs. Despite the severity of the attack, the victim managed to fight back and survived.

During the trial, it was revealed that the perpetrator had expressed a desire to inflict pain, stating, «I want to make her suffer as I have suffered.» Further evidence presented to the jury included recorded jailhouse phone calls, in which the defendant claimed he was «glad» he had shot his ex-wife.

Legal Consequences

Following a jury trial that concluded on Tuesday, September 22, Darrell Long was convicted on several charges, including:

  • Attempted homicide
  • Aggravated assault
  • Burglary
  • Harassment

Lebanon County District Attorney Pier Hess Graf expressed relief regarding the verdict, noting the resilience shown by the victim throughout the legal process. The sentencing hearing for the defendant is scheduled for December 9.

Prior Context and Motivation

Investigations into the motive revealed that the victim had previously blocked the defendant from contacting her. In response, the attacker reportedly used their adult child as a conduit for abusive messages. One such message, sent shortly after the shooting, contained a threatening tone: «You have no dignity, you took everything from me and treat me like I’m a f*ing dog—well guess what, every dog has its day later.»
