Medical Findings Regarding Jack Pugh's Passing

The official cause of death for Jack Pugh, a former University of Wisconsin football player, has been confirmed. According to a coroner's report, the 24-year-old athlete passed away due to acute bronchopneumonia. This condition, which involves fluid accumulation in the lungs and airways, was identified as a complication stemming from cardiomyopathy.

Additionally, the forensic report noted that Pugh was suffering from hepatosplenomegaly—a condition characterized by an enlargement of the liver and spleen—at the time of his death in March.

Remembering a Teammate and Student

Following his passing, the University of Wisconsin community expressed deep sorrow. In a public statement issued on March 31, the university honored his legacy:

“The Wisconsin athletics family is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Jack Pugh. Jack was a positive light and brought a genuine spirit to our football program. More than that, he cared about people and was loved by his teammates and staff.”

Pugh, who originally joined the team as a four-star recruit from Columbus, Ohio, played as a tight end for the Big Ten program between 2021 and 2023. His obituary highlighted his character beyond the gridiron, noting, “His love for sports was matched only by his love for people; Jack had a huge heart and an innate ability to connect with everyone he met.”

Prioritizing Mental Health

Pugh made headlines when he chose to retire from collegiate athletics to focus on his mental health. In a candid social media announcement at the time, he explained his decision:

“My physical health was not near perfect, but my mental health was the reason I decided to hang it up. Over years of prolonged depression and substance abuse, I decided I deserved a better life and to finally find happiness.”

He emphasized that while football was not the cause of his struggles, the demanding nature of his life had previously prevented him from addressing his mental wellbeing. Pugh concluded his message by expressing gratitude toward his coaches, teammates, and family for their support during his journey toward recovery and personal growth.
