Departure from Casa Amor
The latest season of Love Island USA saw another abrupt departure as contestant Alannah Keyser was removed from the show. The network, Peacock, confirmed her exit during the broadcast on Thursday, June 25. This decision followed a period of significantly reduced screen time for the reality star after viewers began circulating footage allegedly showing her using a racial slur.
The Controversy Surrounding Social Media Posts
The backlash ignited shortly after Alannah made her debut on the series. Social media users discovered an older video in which a woman appeared to sing along to a track while using a derogatory term. These clips were not publicly circulated until after the production team had already vetted the contestants, meaning they were not available during the initial background screening process.
Defense and Public Response
In response to the growing public outcry, Alannah’s friend, Nick Rogers, attempted to defend her character. He suggested that the screenshots and media circulating online could be fabricated or manipulated using modern technology.
“I just can’t imagine, me knowing Alannah, her posting that on social media. And we all know with this AI and everything like that, it could be very easy for these types of scenarios to be manipulated,” Rogers stated.
While Rogers admitted that the use of such language is inappropriate, he attempted to provide context regarding the timeframe of the footage, arguing that the social climate in previous years, such as 2016 and 2017, was different regarding the use of such language.
A Pattern of Vetting Challenges
The situation with Keyser is not an isolated incident for the Love Island USA franchise. The show has previously had to address similar controversies involving other contestants:
- Vasana Montgomery: Removed from season 8 following the discovery of past social media posts containing slurs.
- Yulissa Escobar: Departed season 7 shortly after joining the villa when podcast clips of her using racial slurs surfaced.
- Cierra Ortega: Faced intense criticism for resurfaced posts, leading to her removal from the villa and a subsequent public apology.
Love Island USA continues to air new episodes six days a week on Peacock.
