Following their impressive NBA Finals victory last month, there has been significant public speculation regarding whether the New York Knicks will visit the White House to meet with President Donald Trump. Jalen Brunson, the team's 29-year-old superstar, addressed these rumors during a recent appearance at Variety’s inaugural Sports & Entertainment Studio in New York.
Brunson emphasized that the team has yet to formally discuss the matter. «That’s something that we actually haven’t discussed as a team,» Brunson stated. «And so obviously, people are making assumptions and saying everything, but together we haven’t discussed it yet. And so we’ll cross our bridge when we get to it.»
Context of the Potential Visit
When informed that a visit would mark the first time an NBA team has met with President Trump in the White House, Brunson simply remarked, «Interesting…interesting.»
The history of such visits is varied; for instance, the Boston Celtics were the most recent NBA champions to be honored at the White House, having met with President Biden in 2024. At that time, the Celtics cited scheduling conflicts as the reason for delays, noting, «We have been in touch with the White House and we are appreciative and grateful for the communication we have had, but the timing just didn’t work out.»
Management's Perspective
Knicks owner James Dolan, who has maintained a long-standing friendship with Donald Trump for three decades, previously expressed enthusiasm about a potential visit. In a June interview on WFAN, Dolan confirmed that the team had accepted an invitation, though specific logistics were still being finalized.
«He is a friend,» Dolan said of the President. «I’ve known him for 30 years. And I’m very proud to bring the team to the White House.» The White House has also confirmed ongoing communication, stating they look forward to hosting the team on a mutually agreed-upon date.
Personal Interests Beyond the Court
Outside of basketball and team politics, Brunson shared his interest in making a cameo on the long-running series Law & Order: SVU. The Knicks star is a noted fan of the show and has developed a friendship with its lead actress, Mariska Hargitay. His wife, Ali, recently expressed her support for the bond between them, noting that her husband has watched the series faithfully for many years.
