A Shift in Priorities

In the episode that aired on Wednesday, October 14, viewers saw a pivotal moment for Kevin Atwater. Having recently embraced the joys of fatherhood, Atwater initially approached Voight (played by Jason Beghe) to discuss a potential promotion upon his return to duty. However, following a harrowing day that included suffering a gunshot wound and managing a health scare involving his son, Malcolm, Atwater experienced a change of heart. Ultimately, he decided to step away from the force to relocate to Atlanta, prioritizing his family over his career in law enforcement.

The Departure of a Mainstay

LaRoyce Hawkins, 38, has officially departed Chicago P.D. after an impressive 13-season run as a series regular. His exit marks the latest in a series of cast changes that the franchise has navigated throughout its tenure. His departure follows the exits of several other notable cast members, including Toya Turner, who left after a single season, as well as fan favorites Jesse Lee Soffer and Tracy Spiridakos, who had previously stepped away before making appearances in crossover events.

The Future of the One Chicago Franchise

Despite the recurring turnover of beloved characters, the One Chicago universe remains a dominant force on television. Addressing these frequent cast adjustments, Jeff Bader, NBC’s president of program planning, emphasized the resilience of the shows.

“Cast comes in, cast goes out. It’s interesting, because every year there are cast changes, and every year someone asks the same question about what’s going on within the One Chicago universe. But those shows just keep going on,” Bader stated in July 2024.

Bader further noted that the network is extremely pleased with the performance of the Wednesday night lineup and has no intentions of altering the current programming strategy for the franchise. Chicago P.D. continues to air on NBC every Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET.
