Sentencing Details
LeShon Johnson, the 55-year-old former NFL running back, was sentenced on Thursday, September 10, to 60 months in federal prison. Following his incarceration, he will serve three years of supervised release and must pay a $30,000 fine. The sentencing follows his conviction on six federal charges related to a dogfighting ring that led to the suffering or death of hundreds of pit bulls.
Scale of the Operation
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Johnson had been managing an extensive breeding and sales operation since at least 2007. In the largest seizure of its kind in a federal dogfighting case, authorities confiscated 190 dogs from his property.
Evidence presented during the trial revealed the sophisticated and profitable nature of the illegal enterprise:
- Johnson marketed many of his dogs as "champions" and "grand champions," referring to their records of three or five victories in fights.
- He earned substantial revenue—totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars—by selling puppies from specific fighting lineages and charging stud fees for his male dogs.
Official Stance and Legal Defense
Associate Attorney General Stanley E. Woodward Jr. emphasized the severity of the case, stating that Johnson was held accountable for orchestrating a "particularly egregious and violent dog fighting scheme." He further noted that since dogfighting is a felony in every U.S. state, those attempting to profit from such illicit activities will eventually be pursued by the Department of Justice.
Defense attorney Billy Coyle IV had requested probation for his client, citing Johnson's lack of a prior criminal record and his deteriorating health, specifically noting battles with severe dementia and Parkinson’s disease. "The main point was just to show the court that he’d been out on bond for pretrial release for over two years," Coyle explained. "He’s got no infractions whatsoever. He doesn’t drink. He doesn’t smoke. I don’t think the necessity of sending him to prison or jail was necessary."
As of now, a decision regarding an appeal of the sentencing has not been finalized.
