Escalation of a Domestic Dispute
Law enforcement officials in Plant City, Florida, have shed light on the tragic events of May 3, which resulted in a devastating murder-suicide. According to Police Chief Richard Mills, the sequence of events began following a heated argument between 27-year-old Hailey Dempsey and her husband, Jay Dempsey, regarding explicit content found on his mobile device.
Chief Mills clarified the nature of the disagreement during a recent press conference: «It wasn’t cheating or anything like that, evidently it was just porn, and they were having an argument over that. I think that’s what everything stemmed from.»
The Sequence of Fatal Events
Investigators determined that the violence began at a home in the Tampa Bay area. Hailey Dempsey first shot and killed her 55-year-old mother, Valerie DeBoe, who had been visiting from Clearwater. Following this, Dempsey fled the scene with her three young daughters. Authorities state that she then shot and killed her 4-month-old and 4-year-old children. She also attempted to shoot her 2-year-old daughter, who miraculously survived the attack, before taking her own life.
Prior Police Interaction
In the days leading up to the incident, police had been called to the Dempsey residence on multiple occasions. On May 1, officers responded to a report of a verbal confrontation between the couple. The responding officer noted there was «no indication whatsoever» of prior violence or criminal activity. Later that same day, Dempsey requested an inspection of her vehicle for tracking devices, which officers confirmed were not present.
Following a night spent at a hotel with her children and mother, Dempsey requested a police escort to her home the next day to retrieve personal belongings while her husband was absent. Records indicate the couple later met at a local library for a private conversation.
Investigation and Aftermath
While Hailey Dempsey’s husband was initially detained, law enforcement conducted a thorough investigation and subsequently ruled him out as a suspect. Chief Mills noted that evidence points toward underlying mental health struggles, though specific details regarding her medical history were not disclosed.
Reflecting on the scene, Chief Mills expressed the emotional toll the case had taken on the department. «I’ve been in law enforcement for 34 years, I was on that scene, and it was probably the worst scene that I’ve ever seen in my life,» he stated. «It’s absolutely heartbreaking.» The surviving two-year-old child is reportedly in good health and is currently under the care of family members.
