Trump Addresses the Russian Health Crisis
Former President Donald Trump recently shared his concerns regarding a troubling, plague-like health outbreak reported in Russia. During a brief interaction with the press outside the White House on Monday, October 5, Trump was questioned about the situation.
When asked if he was worried about the reports, Trump confirmed his concern but noted that he had not yet had the opportunity to discuss the matter with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The Nature of the Disease
Reflecting on the nature of the reported pneumonia-like illness, Trump expressed deep unease regarding the resilience of modern pathogens. He stated:
«The pneumonia plague, if you call it a plague. I hate to see them having it. It’s a rough disease. That’s a disease we used to be able to control. But somehow those microbes have gotten stronger and smarter. They’re like an army.»
Trump further remarked that despite significant medical progress, pathogens have evolved to become more resistant, noting that traditional treatments for pneumonia are proving less effective than in the past. He concluded his remarks by expressing a willingness to assist.
Context of the Outbreak
The comments follow reports of a fatality at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute in Siberia, where a female staff member died from pneumonia of unknown origin. While Regional Governor Igor Kobsev reported that no specific microorganisms related to her work were identified in her system, the situation led to a quarantine at a hospital facility and medical observation for nearly 200 contacts. At the time of the reports, officials stated there were no additional cases.
In response to the situation, a State Department spokesperson emphasized that many details remain unverified and urged Russian authorities to provide accurate information transparently. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also commented on the developments during a press conference on the same day.
