The basketball community is in mourning following the passing of Don Nelson, an esteemed coach who cemented his place in history as the second-winningest head coach in the NBA. Nelson died at the age of 86, leaving behind a profound legacy that spans decades of professional sports.
His family announced his passing in a statement, noting that he died peacefully on a Sunday morning surrounded by his loved ones. While the exact cause of death remains private, the news of his departure has triggered an outpouring of tributes from across the sports world.
From Champion Player to Coaching Icon
Before his transition to the sidelines, Nelson enjoyed a stellar playing career. He secured five NBA championships during his 11-year tenure with the Boston Celtics. His transition to coaching was equally impactful, as he managed teams for 31 seasons, including stints with the Milwaukee Bucks, Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks, and Dallas Mavericks.
By the time he retired in 2010, Nelson held the record for the most coaching wins in league history, a title he maintained until it was surpassed by Gregg Popovich in 2022. Throughout his career, he led teams to 18 playoff appearances.

Nelson was widely regarded as a basketball visionary. Warriors head coach Steve Kerr praised his ability to challenge conventional strategies, noting:

Hall of Famer Tim Hardaway also weighed in on Nelson's passing, stating, "Nellie was ahead of his time and there was nobody else like him. He had an incredible impact on my career and on the game of basketball."
Don Nelson is survived by his wife, Joy Wolfgram, four children, two stepsons, and a wide circle of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
