Navigating the Aftermath of a High-Stakes Finale
The first season of the Blue Bloods spinoff Boston Blue reached a gripping conclusion on May 22, leaving fans with significant questions regarding the fate of key characters. The finale saw Lena, played by Sonequa Martin-Green, facing a harrowing ordeal, including a serious injury that left her temporarily wheelchair-bound. The episode culminated in a shocking cliffhanger involving her boyfriend, Brian (Ryan Broussard), whose vehicle was deliberately struck, sending him plunging into the ocean.
Showrunner Brandon Sonnier explained that the second season will pick up after a brief time jump, allowing Lena to recover from her physical trauma. "It also pushes us a little bit further down the road of who was driving the car, what was the inciting incident for that event and we unravel what happened right after," Sonnier noted.
The Status of Brian and Potential Cast Departures
Regarding Ryan Broussard’s future on the show, producers remained tight-lipped. While they did not confirm if the character survived the accident, they expressed high regard for the actor's contribution to the project. "We’ve enjoyed working with him this season. If the opportunity for him to be on season 2 is there, we would jump at it," executive producer Brandon Margolis stated. He emphasized that the uncertainty is a deliberate narrative choice intended to keep the audience engaged for the upcoming season.
Expanding the World: Cameos and Crossovers
The finale also featured an appearance by Will Hochman, reprising his role as Joe, which provided a poignant parallel to Lena’s own journey of family discovery. According to Margolis, the cameo was somewhat serendipitous, as the actor happened to be in the area for another production. The creative team expressed a strong desire to continue incorporating members of the Reagan family into the Boston Blue universe moving forward.
Regarding the prospect of further expanding the franchise, the producers did not dismiss the idea of additional spinoffs. "If the opportunity presents itself and there’s the right story to tell… absolutely. We love it," they confirmed.
The Future of Danny and Baez
The season finale brought a moment of reconciliation for Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) and Baez (Marisa Ramirez), with the couple discussing the possibility of moving in together. Reflecting on their evolving dynamic, Sonnier acknowledged the challenges of a relationship between two professionals living in different cities. However, he confirmed that Marisa Ramirez will return for the second season, promising more screen time for the fan-favorite pair.
"We enjoy Marisa and the two of them as a couple light up the screen. We love getting to tell stories about those two and we’re always looking for opportunities to do that," Margolis added, confirming the character's continued presence in the narrative.
