Explaining the Early Departure

Fans of the Today show were left wondering why meteorologist Al Roker disappeared from the broadcast mid-show on Monday, September 28. The 72-year-old personality quickly took to Instagram to clarify the situation, revealing that he had been called for jury duty.

Standing outside a courthouse in New York City, a smiling Roker, dressed in a gray suit and a tan fedora, addressed his followers: «Well, I got out of the Today show early because I’ve got jury duty. It’s everybody’s civic duty to do your duty. I said duty twice!»

The On-Air Transition

During the live broadcast, viewers noticed that Roker was absent during his usual weather segment, with Dylan Dreyer filling in. While host Savannah Guthrie informed the audience that Roker had to depart early, she provided no specific details at the time. Co-host Craig Melvin eventually reassured the audience by promising that the popular weatherman would return the following day.

Jury Duty and Work-Life Balance

In the comments section of his post, Roker provided additional context regarding his civic obligations. He explained that he had successfully requested to postpone his service until later in the year:

«To update you, I got a postponement til December when work is a little less crazy. But I LOVE jury duty. I know I am fortunate that my company pays me while I’m serving in a jury. Not everyone has that luxury. Doing your civic duty should NOT be a hardship.»

A History of Scheduled Absences

This is not the first time Roker’s absence from the morning show has sparked curiosity among fans. In previous instances, his co-hosts have playfully noted his time away. For example, during his 71st birthday celebration, his wife, journalist Deborah Roberts, shared that the couple was traveling in Italy, where she celebrated her husband with a heartfelt tribute, describing his kindness and joy as «boundless blessings.»
