A Final Farewell on CBS Evening News
Following the abrupt and controversial dismissal of veteran correspondent Scott Pelley from 60 Minutes, current CBS Evening News host Tony Dokoupil took a moment during his broadcast to honor his longtime colleague's significant contributions to journalism. During the segment on Wednesday, June 3, Dokoupil reflected on Pelley’s 37-year tenure at the network, highlighting his commitment to journalistic integrity.
“When I started at CBS, Scott Pelley was in this very chair... meeting every new correspondent to his view of the mission here,” Dokoupil stated. He emphasized Pelley’s deep belief in the importance of a free press, noting that the veteran reporter viewed his position as a responsibility to uphold the highest global standards. Throughout his career, Pelley secured interviews with every U.S. president from George W. Bush to Donald Trump and amassed over 50 Emmy Awards.
Reflecting on a Legacy
Dokoupil described Pelley, 68, as a journalist from a different era who prioritized objective truth above all else. He recalled how Pelley famously replaced his own name on the CBS Evening News signage with the phrase, “The CBS Evening News with All of Us,” signaling his dedication to the team effort. Dokoupil concluded the tribute by saying, “Well, Scott, from all of us, thank you.”
The Conflict Behind the Departure
The tribute stood in stark contrast to the internal turmoil at CBS News that led to Pelley’s exit. The friction reportedly began during a 60 Minutes staff meeting on June 1, where Pelley challenged the qualifications of new executive producer Nick Bilton. According to reports, Pelley also criticized CBS editor-in-chief Bari Weiss, alleging that the introduction of political bias was damaging the program.
The following day, Bilton issued a memo terminating Pelley’s employment. In the correspondence, Bilton wrote:
“Your antipathy to the future of the show has come through loud and clear. I therefore write on behalf of CBS News, Inc. to inform you that your employment with CBS is terminated for cause effective immediately.”
Pelley’s Response and Allegations
In the wake of his firing, Pelley issued a statement expressing his disappointment in the network's leadership. He alleged that management had sacrificed the news division’s legacy to appease the Trump administration. Pelley noted that he had fought to protect the integrity of 60 Minutes but concluded that the current leadership had abandoned the core principles he stood for.
“The principles I hold dear are gone, and so I must leave as well,” Pelley remarked. In response to these claims, CBS News officially denied that its journalists were subject to any political pressure regarding their coverage of the Trump administration.
