Concerns Over Investigative Experience
Aaron Cross, president of the Pima County Deputies Organization, has publicly raised alarms regarding the professional background of the detectives tasked with solving the mysterious disappearance of Nancy Guthrie. Over six months have passed since Guthrie vanished, yet the case remains without significant leads or identified suspects.
Cross pointed specifically to the lead sergeant, noting his rapid transition into the homicide division. According to Cross, the sergeant was promoted only in 2023 and lacked a deep history in homicide investigations prior to his current assignment. “So command, for whatever reason despite the fact that he had never been in homicide before, thought he was the right person for that unit,” Cross stated.
Allegations of Inadequate Mentorship
Cross argued that the current team consists largely of “novice homicide detectives,” a situation he describes as unprecedented within the department. Historically, he explained, new additions to such sensitive units would be surrounded by experienced mentors to guide them through complex casework.
“You can’t even call yourself a homicide detective until you’ve been through a trial — so it takes time to learn the ropes,” Cross noted.
Controversy Over Handling of the Crime Scene
When asked to identify the most significant error in the investigation, Cross highlighted the decision-making process during the initial stages. He alleged that the crime scene was released back to the family prematurely, within only one day, which he views as a major misstep in the pursuit of evidence.
In response to these allegations, a representative for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department stated that they have “no information” to provide regarding this matter at this time.
Official Stance and Family Plea
Sheriff Chris Nanos has faced increasing public scrutiny regarding the department's handling of the case, including reports of friction between local authorities and federal agencies. Despite the criticism, Sheriff Nanos has maintained that his team remains deeply committed to the investigation, expressing his dedication to the Guthrie family in recent public statements.
Meanwhile, Nancy Guthrie’s daughter, Savannah Guthrie, continues to seek answers. On the six-month anniversary of her mother's disappearance, she shared a heartfelt message on social media, describing the profound agony her family has endured since their mother was taken from her home.
