A Night of Comedic Roasts

The 2026 ESPY Awards, hosted at the David H. Koch Theater in New York City, saw Saturday Night Live star Marcello Hernández take the stage to deliver a memorable and daring monologue. Known for his quick wit, the 28-year-old comedian spared no one during his opening set.

Hernández kicked off the event with a series of sharp quips, including a lighthearted jab at golfer Tiger Woods in the wake of his recent legal troubles in Florida. He then transitioned to the world of gaming and sports, joking about Caleb Williams, the Chicago Bears quarterback who landed the cover of the latest Madden video game. "Congratulations to Caleb — and Tiger Woods will be on the cover of Grand Theft Auto," the host quipped.

Tackling High-Profile Controversies

The host did not shy away from trending headlines. He addressed the 48-year age gap between legendary coach Bill Belichick and his girlfriend, Jordon Hudson. When the audience reaction turned tense, Hernández playfully challenged the crowd, asking, "That’s where you all draw the line?"

Other targets included:

  • Jake Paul: The influencer and boxer was warned by Hernández to keep things peaceful, with the host joking, "My dad and my stepdad are here and they’re both over 50 and I know that’s how you like ‘em."
  • Shane Gillis: Reflecting on last year’s polarizing host, Hernández noted that Gillis was likely watching the ceremony "like a true American," adding, "On his couch, drinking a beer while a Hispanic guy does his job."

From the Pitch to the Stage

The decision to select Hernández as host was praised by ESPN leadership. Craig Lazarus, ESPN vice president and executive producer of the ESPYs, lauded the comedian’s genuine passion for athletics and his deep connection to New York City as the ideal qualities for the role.

Hernández himself has a background in competitive sports, having played collegiate soccer at John Carroll University in Ohio. He eventually pivoted from soccer to pursue a career in comedy, a gamble that proved successful when he joined Saturday Night Live in 2022. Drawing parallels between his two passions, Hernández explained that both fields require immense dedication: "Soccer’s a full-time job because you’re taking care of your body and I think that SNL is a full-time job because of the schedule, but also you’re taking care of your mind. It’s a much more mental game than a physical game but pretty demanding for sure."

In his preparation for the hosting duties, Hernández looked to his own experiences, noting the long road he took from performing in Greenwich Village for stage time to headlining one of sports' biggest nights.
