Navigating Professionalism After a Breakup
Madelyn Cline has offered a candid perspective on the complexities of maintaining a professional relationship with her former partner and Outer Banks co-star, Chase Stokes, following their separation in 2021.
In a recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, the 28-year-old actress acknowledged the inherent challenges of their situation. «There were moments when it was difficult, absolutely,» Cline admitted. «But once the dust kind of settled, we were able to just revert to the friendship that we always had.»
The Intersection of Personal and Professional Life
Cline and the 33-year-old Stokes first crossed paths while filming the Netflix hit Outer Banks, where their characters, Sarah Cameron and John B. Routledge, share a central romance. Their on-screen chemistry transitioned into a real-life relationship, which lasted from 2020 through 2021. Despite their romantic conclusion, the pair continued to portray a couple on screen, a task that presented significant emotional hurdles.
Overcoming Identity Struggles
During a podcast appearance on Therapuss in early 2025, Cline reflected on the difficulties of having an intimate relationship under the constant scrutiny of fans. She noted that at the time, she was perhaps naive regarding the impact public interest would have on their private lives.
Reflecting on the period post-breakup, Cline shared, «It was really, really hard to separate. But, also like any breakup, you grow out of it, which is great. But there was a period of time there where I truly did not know which way was up, which way was down because Outer Banks and that public relationship was kind of my identity. And I was like, ‘Who the f* am I?’»
Moving Forward
Since their split, both actors have pursued different romantic paths. Reports indicate that Cline has been involved with real estate professional Michael Reyes since this past summer, while Stokes was previously linked to Kelsea Ballerini between 2023 and 2026. Cline emphasized that she continues to prioritize personal growth as she navigates her life and career beyond her previous public identity.
