Maintaining Professional Focus Amid Criticism

CNN reporter Kaitlan Collins has broken her silence following a series of public remarks made by President Donald Trump, who targeted her appearance and compared her to trans actress Dylan Mulvaney. The 34-year-old journalist addressed the situation during an appearance on The Daily Show.

When asked about the President’s commentary, which included suggestions that she should “smile more,” Collins emphasized her commitment to professional conduct. “I’ve always felt this, regardless of who’s the president … it’s really not about me, and I don’t want it to be about my reaction,” she stated. “Instead, I think it’s more important to remind people in those moments when he is insulting me … it’s important to put the reminder back on the work, on the question, and on the non-answers that we get.”

Observations from the White House Correspondents Dinner

The controversy stems from comments made by the President during the White House Correspondents Dinner. While the President spoke at length about the reporter, Collins noted that the atmosphere in the room was remarkably still. She expressed that she was not shocked by the President’s tone, given her long tenure covering his administration.

“I’ve covered Trump for 10 years so I’ve listened to pretty much all of his speeches. In the room, I was not surprised when he insulted me,” Collins explained. “What was most surprising to me is that the room was filled with a lot of his staffers, his cabinet, his allies, Republicans in Congress. It was so quiet in the room during the president’s remarks.”

The Comparison to Dylan Mulvaney

During his speech, the President revisited a previous comparison he had drawn between the CNN anchor and Dylan Mulvaney, a transgender activist who became the center of a national firestorm in 2023 following a marketing campaign with Bud Light. The President remarked, “I thought Kaitlan had really made it big with a major new sponsorship, but then I was informed that it wasn’t her on the Bud Light can; it was Dylan Mulvaney.”

Following the event, the President further amplified the comparison on social media by posting an AI-generated image that depicted the reporter’s features superimposed onto an image of Mulvaney holding a promotional can. In response to the viral moment, Mulvaney posted a video on social media, expressing, “Thanking the president for reminding me that I am more powerful than I even knew.”

Official Response

White House spokesperson Davis Ingle declined to apologize for the remarks, providing a statement suggesting that the media often struggles to handle the same type of criticism they direct at others. Despite the public nature of the attacks, Collins remained focused on her role, citing the quote, “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent,” while reflecting on her recent reporting work.
