Hunter Biden, the 56-year-old son of former president Joe Biden, has provided a somber update regarding his father's health as he continues to confront a serious cancer diagnosis. In a recent interview with the BBC, Hunter spoke openly about the reality of his father’s condition.
«It’s really tough, and that’s the real answer,» Hunter stated. «My dad, to this day, remains the center of our family not just because of who he is as a public person but completely because of who he is to each one of us. It’s really, really hard and it’s really sad to watch.»
Family History and Diagnosis
Joe Biden, 83, has faced significant personal tragedies throughout his life. He shares children Beau and Hunter, along with his late daughter Naomi, with his first wife, Nealia. Tragically, Nealia and Naomi lost their lives in a 1972 car accident, and his son Beau passed away in 2015 following a battle with glioblastoma. Joe also has a 45-year-old daughter, Ashley, with his current wife, Dr. Jill Biden.
The former president was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer in May 2025. Official reports indicated that the disease had metastasized to the bone.

Earlier this summer, Dr. Jill Biden shared her perspective on how the illness has shifted the family's dynamics and her husband's daily routine. During an appearance on the On Purpose podcast with Jay Shetty, she noted that while the former president remains active, the effects of the disease are evident.
«He’s doing OK. He does have stage IV cancer. It has metastasized to his bones. He will forever have cancer. He will forever be on medicine, and he’s 83,» Jill explained. «You put that mix in, so, while yes, he’s still working, he’s writing his book, he’s traveling, he’s speaking, but he’s a little more tired. I’ve seen him slow down. I mean, cancer really takes a toll.»
Support from the Family
Dr. Biden emphasized that the entire family has rallied to support Joe through his treatment. She highlighted the proactive role played by their grandchildren in providing care and comfort.
«Naomi, our oldest grandchild, said, ‘Nana, I want to come visit and bring my son, Willie, and stay with you for a month and help you out.’ I mean, it’s just been a really nice thing,» Jill shared, referring to the support coming from Hunter's daughter and her husband, Peter Neal.
