Tragic Loss in the Racing Community

The motorsports world is mourning the loss of former IndyCar driver Ricky Treadway, who passed away at the age of 56 following a motorcycle accident. While reports confirmed the occurrence of the crash, specific details regarding the incident remain undisclosed at this time.

A Legacy in IndyCar

Treadway’s professional racing journey spanned the 2001 and 2002 seasons. He was the son of Fred Treadway, the distinguished team owner who secured a victory at the 1997 Indianapolis 500. During his own time behind the wheel, Ricky Treadway participated in 11 races under the banners of Treadway-Hubbard Racing and Treadway Racing.

A notable, albeit difficult, moment in his career occurred during the 2002 Indianapolis 500. Treadway was forced to retire from the race early following a collision on the track with driver Tony Kanaan. An Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) spokesperson remarked: «The Indy 500 start was the highlight of Treadway’s INDYCAR SERIES career».

Tributes from the Industry

Fellow racing personalities have taken to social media to express their grief and share memories of Treadway.

Two-time Indy 500 champion Arie Luyendyk shared a heartfelt message on X, stating: «Sad news hearing Rick Treadway passed away last Saturday. Our condolences go out to my former team owner Fred Treadway, Janice and Brian Treadway. Rick was a fun, crazy, humble, wild and brave personality. RIP Ricky».

Current IndyCar and NASCAR driver Conor Daly also offered his respects, noting the impact Treadway’s name had on his own career and podcast segments, adding: «RIP Ricky. We’ll keep doing our #indy500 driver research in your honor!»

Life Beyond the Track

According to an official release from IndyCar, Treadway’s life outside of racing was defined by his dedication to aviation and business. At the time of his passing, he was actively involved in business development and served as a commercial pilot for his personal charter air service. Additionally, he was an FAA-certified flight instructor, showcasing his multifaceted expertise beyond the world of motorsport.
