Reflecting on the Fan Reaction
The third season of HBO's hit series Euphoria concluded with a bold narrative choice that left viewers stunned: the death of a major character. Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, who portrayed the antagonist Alamo, recently opened up about the potential fallout from this high-stakes storytelling move.
Speaking at a recent charity event, the 58-year-old actor acknowledged the intense devotion of the show's audience. “It’s a voracious fan base. It’s really their show. It preceded me. I’ve done my part. Whatever they say and do is their part so that’s where I leave it,” he stated regarding the inevitable social media discourse.
The Turning Point for Rue
In the May 31 episode, the plot reached a dark climax when Alamo provided Rue (Zendaya) with pain medication tainted with fentanyl. This act was revealed to be a calculated move to eliminate Rue after discovering her collaboration with the DEA. Reflecting on the show's core, Akinnuoye-Agbaje noted the impact of Zendaya’s performance, stating, “The beautiful thing about Euphoria is—first of all—this incredible performance that Zendaya has done. She narrates the show and we’ve seen it largely through her perspective.”
Creative Vision and Thematic Depth
Despite the grim outcome for the protagonist, Akinnuoye-Agbaje offered high praise for series creator Sam Levinson. He highlighted the infusion of complex themes throughout the season:
“This season has been heavily influenced with religious themes about God and belief. All of that came to bear in the final episode. It sums up the consequences of everyone’s choices so you will see a reckoning. It’s poetic and it’s poignant. It’s responsible as well in his artistry in the message that it’s sending out.”
The actor also shed light on the aesthetic direction of the season, explaining that Levinson aimed to blend classic Western iconography with a modern sensibility, weaving these elements into the long-standing arcs of the ensemble cast.
Possibility for Future Projects
Looking toward the future, the actor expressed openness to revisiting his character in a potential spinoff. “I would be up for it. It’s such a rich character and we saw such a beautiful back story,” he remarked. “It would be great to see how he got to that house on the hill. We are going to put it out in the ethos.”
Euphoria is available for streaming on HBO Max.
